Great signage is an absolute must have for any successful retail location. However, bad signs may be worse than no signs at all. Make sure you’re not committing any of the following “sins of shop signage.”
It’s important to be sure your signs are sending the right message. Check your message and then check it again. Then ask someone unfamiliar with your signs what they think it mean. To quote the Princess Bride, Sometimes, “I do not think that word means, what he thinks it means.”
Sometimes it’s the formatting, sometimes it’s the choice of language. But, whatever the reason, you want to be sure your signs are easy to read and your message is clear.
Downright Insulting Signs
Don’t insult your customers or their intelligence.
Spelling and punctuation matter! If spelling isn’t your strong suit, have someone else check it over before printing!!! You can send the entirely wrong message with just a misplaced letter or comma.
Old or Shoddy Signs
Shop signage should be fresh and bright. Properly designed and printed signage should last for years.
Shop signs tell the public who you are and what they can expect to find within your doors. If you’re not boring and dull, don’t let your signs be, either!
